Trace and Grace – Country Star Adkins, “You’re Gonna Miss This” – harmonic tempo analysis
Country music star, actor and overall stand up man, Mister TRACE ADKINS was a celebrity unknown to me until I saw him on Mister Donald Trump’s program that just keeps getting better as Mister Trump is proving that he can mentor the entire nation through his Survival version of Jeff’s “tribal council.” Both are a showing of boldness on the part of anyone who enter the boardroom or the Tribal Council fore are. Over the years, the shows have continued improving in large part because the casting was better, the editing better, but maybe the most importantly Jeff adjusting to Tribal and not turning into a Survivalist
version of the Outdoor Boardroom. I truly admire anyone who has the guts to even try out to be on one of these shows. Among those who have impressed me the most, though, in terms of celebrity is Trace. Put simply, he is an excellent guitarist, singer, actor and father. He is a composer and though married, women pass out when they see him. How does Trace take being treated like a King? With honor, quiet strength, humor (who knew?) and a true Christian humility making him, ultimately, a man so personable that were he a politician: if Reagan was elected twice, Trace may be able to do the same. Like Reagan, the actors on the Young and the Restless set with him, Michelle Stafford, Peter Bergman, Josh Morrow and Eric Braeden seemed, as on Trump’s visionary program while Trace was in a room, he lit it up and colored it with humor (unlike Sammy Davis Junior’s CANDYMAN who colored the world with dew – which even to me a mixed metaphor that is one step too far). Most importantly, I ask any of you, was anyone ever nervous in the presence of this 6′ 5″ master of the United States country scene? Never. and just as Jeanne Cooper’s experience with Trace on the CBS® set: I never met the man, though we were on the same team. It was a golden age of class and respect, but unlike most golden ages, which we “don’t miss until they are one,” we on “The Hill” knew it. Reagan was elected that November 4th, my wedding anniversary not by accident. This song by Trace bespeaks the first type, like when you dump the person who you liked to go to concerts and movies with the most and do not realize that you missed your chance. If you have read this far, it has happened to you. I know it has for me! Just kidding []! HOWEVER, lest I digress,
the most counterintuitive element of the meanspeed music theory applied is: those songs that go near the meanspeed, 77-78 beat per minute, or √3/5″ per beat. are asymptoyic, not purely but consistently and predictable, to y (as an axis)=77.746 beats per miute or y (as an axis)=0.7746 seconds.
The mean speed of music in general, as I have hypothesized for two decades, is proposed to be 77.459666… beats per minute with 0.77459666… seconds between each beat, accelerating ode decelerating by less than 5 percent. A counterintuition, a strange one (redundant but so weird most people can’t handle it, as simple truth though it be, by NATURE – not me, not Jerry Lee Lewis, not Chopin. Biology counts. Literally.
What is so strange? A tiny from 77 bpm acceleration means the person has given into loneliness and despair while a slight deceleration to 76 indicates a calm return to a graceful state.
In regard to the bizarre range of 77-78, nicely avoided here by Trace, I find very few performers able to hold the bittersweetness range. Bittersweetness of heart and mind, where the experience is sweet but the aftertaste bitter demands holding two separate ideas in the performer’s head at once. Eric Clapton recorded tears in Heaven at 77.6 BPM, I have calibrated it on soundtracks (Rush starring Jason Patrick and Jennifer Jason Leigh) pressed by different companies as low as 76.4 bpm. However the version we know and love is the live MTV Unplugged version where Eric just lets go of the maudlin and embraces the lonely pain and plays at a consistent 80-83 bpm. Take a look at some of the songs there!
On Friday, Trace Adkins performed on the best drama on free television, The Young And The Restless®. He sang a song about appreciating what seem like hard times in the present moment. In a sweet country song echoing the sentiment of the Beatles’ We Can Work It Out said, Life is very short. In the song, a mother talks to her daughter and the father to his son about childhood memories, and just as we prepare for the ultra-languid “Cat’s In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin, “Times Of Your Life” by Paul Anka. “Dream On” by Aerosmith SONG OF MAUDLIN SADNESS – it goes through the meanspeed but cannot stay there as the meanspeed for the studio version is in the lonely 80 bpm range and the Live Classic version is more peaceful and happier at 76 bpm. Genesis played 30,000 concerts – something like that – never could hold down 77 bpm. Their last album featured a song “Never A Time” at precisely 77.0000 bpm on record. same was never heard live. The hit songs in that group are mainly: strange and trying not to cry, and failing, making the attempt at not crying way worse. Cry or do not cry – but that lump in the throat stuff? That is DEFINED as simply the time sequence √3/5 seconds.
And that of a Trace Adkins would not fall in to the meanspeed sound-black hole! Traced plays this one in the same tempo pattern as the Beatles play Hey Jude and as James Taylor sings Something In The Way She Moves, Fire and Rain and Carolina in my mind. Specifically, Trace slows down to the speed of grace, 70-76 beats per minute, yielding a mean speed of a graceful 75.5 beats per minute – “Whiter Shade Of Pale” by Procol Harem or John Lennon’s “Imagine” 70-76 beats per minute speed range
rather than the LONELY songs that dominate, against one’s sense of iniuiton or common sense, to the faster “We Will Rock You” by Queen or “I Wanna Know What Love Is” by Foreigner or “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver which are all truly sad and lonely songs cloaked in sweet tones, melodies and harmonies but such SAD expression! Not that of a Trace. Trace is a man of confidence and grace, and he truly shows it in this scene with actors Josh Morrow as Nick Newman and multi-award winning Michelle Stafford as Phyllis Summer Romalotti Abbott Newman.
